Frequently Asked Questions

Is it sliceable?

Yes! If you are looking for exceptional, sliceable vegan options for your cheese board, Reine vegan cheese is perfect! Reine cheeses are thick and spreadable as they warm from the fridge. To cut wedges for your platter, freeze for 20-30 minutes before slicing with a sharp knife.

Does it melt?

Generally vegan "cheeses" that melt do so from added saturated fats, gums and starches—We prefer to keep the quality of our ingredients healthful and free from additives or emulsifiers. Therefore, while our cheese does not melt, it heats well and can be incorporated into any dish, salad, pizza or appetizer.

Is it Organic?

We use certified organic ingredients whenever possible, which have been verified and registered as Organic by the state of California.

Does it contain Gluten?

None of our cheese wheels or fruit jams are made with gluten or gluten-containing ingredients. Occasionally our cream cheese spreads have vegan graham crackers or other items which may contain gluten, which will always be listed in the ingredients.

Is it Vegan?

Absolutely! None of our products contain animal products, milk, milk derivatives, dairy, lactose or honey. Our cheese is certified vegan by Vegan.org which require a rigorous vetting process.

Does it contain GMO?

Our products do not consist of, nor contain, nor are produced from genetically modified organisms.

Do your products contain soy?

No. Our products are soy-free.

Do Reine cheeses contain live probiotics?

Yes! Ingredients are heated at low temperatures to create an optimal environment for healthy probiotics to flourish while not altering the concentration of the nutritional profile. We do not cook off (kill) the live, healthy cultures present in our cheese at any time during the manufacturing process. We use a proprietary blend of 5 vegan probiotic cultures (FYI: most cultures are NOT vegan and many vegan producers use cultures grown on milk medium)

Is it Raw?

Technically no cashew product is raw since they are steamed at high temperatures to remove the outer pod. Raw cashews contain urushiol, a resin that is toxic if ingested and can cause rashes or burns if it contacts the skin.

To remove this substance, cashews must go through a rigorous roasting or steaming process to ensure they are safe to eat. This is why cashews for purchase are always pre-shelled.

How should I store Reine vegan cheese?

Refrigerate up to 7-10 days or freeze for up to 6 months. Our cheese is wrapped in specialized sustainable, 100% recyclable cheese papers that we have custom-made. These wrappers allow your cheese to breath and continue the aging process while helping to absorb any natural moisture or condensation that may occur during transit or shelf-time or as a result of thawing. This helps to preserve the probiotic activity and extends shelf life. That said, if you do not plan to eat or freeze within 7-10 days, we recommend unwrapping the cheese to store in wax paper or covered lightly with plastic wrap or a cloche to allow the condensation during transit to dry out and the cheese to breathe. Otherwise freeze for up to 6 months until ready to consume.

My cheese arrived slightly moist. Is this normal?

Condensation from ice in your package may cause moisture and is not a concern. Because we use no preservatives or emulsifiers, natural oils may migrate to the rind from the ground cashew base and is not unusual (like oil separation of natural peanut butter.) One trick is to re-wrap the cheese in a clean, absorbent paper towel and chill down by refrigeration for 1-2 hours or freeze for 30 minutes before consuming.

Will freezing alter the nutritional value or flavor?

Absolutely not! Our cheeses freeze and thaw very well. The nutritional value, texture or taste is not altered by freezing. While frozen, the live cultures in the rounds “sleep," and revive upon thawing to continue the natural aging process in your fridge.
